Mathematics

Week 3

This week we are sorting, labelling, counting and displaying data.

We started by sorting objects in different ways.

Sophia sorted the shapes by colour.
Francis sorted the shapes by shape.

Connie sorted the shapes by size.

After this, we investigated the question,'what is your favourite ice cream?'
We displayed the data in the following way:

By the end of the week we had completed a class investigation into 'What is Room 15's favourite ice cream?' We mane tally charts from our initial data then a pictograph.
We then asked each other questions about the data.

How you can help at home:
  • gather objects together and look at ways to group them and then label the groups
  • count how many things in each set
  • make up a question together and ask other family members and display the results

Weeks 1 and 2

To begin the year in mathematics we learnt how to do some mathematical activities which we will be able to use in our mathematics programme throughout the year.

The strand maths we are studying is statistics, in which we are learning to conduct investigations.

We are learning to:

  • ask and answer questions
  • gather, sort, count and display the data discuss the results using mathematical language like 'the most','the least', "more than' and 'less than
  • 'interpret  the statements others make about the data

We will also look at the probability of things happening and discuss using language such as certain, possible and unlikely.

The first statistical investigation we carried out was- 'Are there more boys or girls in Room 15?'

To find out the answer we made a pictograph. When we had made the pictograph we discussed the results and then asked each other, other questions about what the graph was showing us.
